Stop Here and Listen to the Birdies
I like to spend a few minutes every morning listening to the beautiful harmonies of all the songbirds that live in our backyard. Robins, cardinals, chickadees, and even common sparrows have the sweetest morning songs and sounds. It doesn’t take much for these chirps and whistles to drown out all of the other sounds that surround me – and that gives me great peace and joy!
Novelist and children’s writer, Kyo Maclear wrote, “OK. It’s possible that birds may sing just for the joy of it.” I think she’s right! Isn’t it a wonderful thought that the many songs and sounds of birds are simply present “just for the joy of it.” But the warning that goes along with it is that we need to be purposeful and willing to listen! Just as surely as the birds are singing, we often busy ourselves so much with hurrying to get from point A to point B, or with being so captivated by our own inner voices mapping out the day, that we miss the simple beauty that is so freely there for each of us.
Maybe this little simple sidewalk drawing is just what each of us needs today. So, grab a piece of sidewalk chalk, create your own sidewalk art, and “Stop here and listen…” If you are struggling with anxiety, I urge you to read about anxiety treatment, and then reach out to us at Christian Counseling Associates for a free consultation.
